王镛谈吴昌硕
吴昌硕，是站在石鼓文顶端的大师，被誉为“石鼓篆书第一人”。与大家想象的不同，他接触石鼓文的时间较晚，约略是而立之后的事。
父亲吴辛甲是位读书人，喜欢治印，虽然落魄，却一直教儿子读书、篆刻。在长达几十年的练习中，金石气慢慢渗透进了吴昌硕的艺术血液里。
15 岁那年，太平军与清军战于浙西，全家避乱于荒山野谷中，弟弟妹妹先后饿死，吴昌硕与家人失散后，只得替人做短工、打杂度日，先后在湖北、安徽等地流亡数年。
1864 年，局势稍宁，21 岁的吴昌硕回到故里，在县学官的催促下，勉强参加应试，中得秀才后，离家赴湖、杭、苏、沪等地寻师访友。10 多年后，他写下第一篇石鼓文书法作品，此后的 50 年间，反复钻研，终登山巅。
半个世纪，从未停笔，我们通过这期间的变化，看一看真正的书法家是怎样炼成的：
写下下面这些字的时候，他初到苏州，不过 30 多岁。这个时候的书法，更像是一幅习作。

吴昌硕早期作品
1886 年，吴昌硕 43 岁，临写石鼓文已有几年。这一年，他完成了平生最早的一整卷石鼓文书写，乍看，进步很大，字迹工整，但仍在尽力摹写先秦文字的外形，不得其神。

1892 年，49 岁的吴昌硕仍在进步，他渐渐去除掉了以往“刻意为之”的外在金石气，但整体风貌却仍被困在石鼓文的“形”中。
两年后，中日甲午战争爆发，他参佐吴大澄戎幕，北上抗日。国破山河，满目疮痍，他的内心满是复兴中华文化的心志。
而临写石鼓文，仍是他的日课，不敢懈怠。

成长于清末，变革之心强烈，他在 1899 年做过一个月的安东县令便匆匆解甲归田，文人气息在他身上刻下了永久的印迹。
1903 年，临习之事再跨一个台阶，他挣脱了形似的束缚，但仍不满此时的“收成”，走出“牢笼”的他，明白这不是终点。
此时，吴昌硕 60 岁，他继续练习，继续前行。

再过 5 年，初见气象。
他亦不敢放松，仍是每日勤勉，研墨写字。

1913 年，西泠印社成立，吴昌硕任社长。同年，他与实业家王一亭结为至交，在王一亭的推荐下，上海商界、金融界无人不识其书画金石艺术，名声大振。
古稀有余，73 岁的吴昌硕早已将众人甩在身后。他此时写下的石鼓文，凝练遒劲，跌宕起伏，放达不羁，已有宗师之相。

1921 年，他赴杭州宴集。东汉建武年间的《汉三老碑》被日商购去，身为西泠印社社长的吴昌硕与同仁奔走呼吁，作画义卖，终募款 8000 大洋将碑赎回。
这一年，他的字是自家风貌，求书者踏破门庭。

1923 年，潘天寿与沙孟海先后拜至吴昌硕门下，专心研画练字。
耄耋之年的他，不曾停笔。临过无数次的石鼓文，仍然被他反复的写在宣纸上，但每一次落墨，皆不相同。

吴昌硕一生临文无数，晚年方才悟得临气不临形的心得。那些先秦的石鼓文字，线条饱满圆润，结体错落多变，遒朴奇崛有“上古风”，而他接过来的，也正是这种“上古风”。
